MONUMENT/monument

Paris, August 24-30, 2007.

Monument/monument is a series of five photographs that work to subvert or undermine the scale and sociopolitical impact of significant buildings in Paris, France. It also questions outmoded ideals of societal hierarchies while respecting how they have positively affected the current state of affairs.

There is no attempt to detract from the architectural significance of the structures (each is indeed still a monument) and the beauty of each is left in tact. The context of each monument is, however, manipulated to a point where it’s significance is re-scaled. The human element (which is essential in classification as a monument) is either removed or adjusted. The constructs responsible for the mere existence of these buildings are completely removed. They each become whimsical haphazard entities that either co-exist in a different context to which they were conceived or completely removed from its context to the point of becoming follies.
